Biography
Gary Gontier lives in Barrie Ontario, where he plays, teaches, writes and arranges for guitar. He has a teaching studio and small recording studio built in his century old double brick home. A much sought after teacher in the area; some of Gary’s most prominent students include Corey Heuvel (Teenage Blues, Rock Guitar Phenom). Andrew Ferguson (1st in the Ontario Provincial Guitar Finals 2006). Joe Abbott a talented young guitar teacher and performer in the Barrie area. (2nd in the Ontario Provincial Guitar Finals 2007).
When Gary was 20 he won best classical guitarist in an international competition in Chicago and a national competition in Toronto in the same year. Gary was self-taught until he got pointed in the right direction with his technique by Barrie’s Marcel Potvin. Gary then continued classical guitar studies with Carol Van Feggelen, Eli Kassner (Liona Boyd) and Norbert Kraft.
Under Gary’s tutelage over 2 dozen classical guitar students have attained the highest mark in Ontario on their Royal Conservatory exams, including teacher composer Johan Puhm who won this award twice while studying with Gary including an impressive 90% on his grade 9 guitar exam. In 1996 Jon Dalton, one of Gary’s students won the prestigious Rose Bowl Award. (Highest local award where the top guitarist competes against all competition from all disciplines).
Gary received his A.R.C.T. in guitar teaching from the Royal Conservatory of Music (University of Toronto) in November 1982 with 1st class honors. Gary has written 4 repertoire books for guitar. He also has 5 CDs to his credit, that are now available on his website.
